Welcome to CAPTN

The interdisciplinary CAU initiative "CAPTN" stands for the development of an integrated mobility chain by combining environmentally friendly autonomous bus and ferry services with a pilot application in Kiel. Within the framework of the joint project, a future-oriented structure of local public transport (ÖPNV) is to be established. The basis are low-emission, autonomously operated passenger ferries with direct connections to bus services.

A total of 16 CAU working groups from the fields of technology, information technology, law, innovation research, acceptance research and philosophy, working groups from Kiel University of Applied Sciences and industrial designers from Muthesius University of the Arts have been working together with companies from the shipyard and supplier industry in Schleswig-Holstein on the technological implementation of the topic since May 2017. The state capital of Kiel and its companies are important partners of CAPTN and provide the necessary infrastructure. For the City of Kiel, the project approach means establishing an innovative urban transport infrastructure, strengthening tourism and contributing to Kiel's supra-regional appeal as the capital of Schleswig-Holstein.

Innovation-oriented network CAPTN

The state of Schleswig-Holstein has been funding CAPTN since January 2020 up to and including June 2021 as an innovation-oriented network from the funding program "Application-oriented Research, Innovations and Technology Transfer - FIT". With this friendly support, it is possible to better coordinate all stakeholders with an extended management circle and to significantly accelerate the main goals of the network, the construction of the digital test field "FÖRDEAREAL", as well as the construction of the test vehicle "WAVELAB".

19.08.2020 _ Letter of intent signed for "FÖRDE 5G" project

On Wednesday, Lord Mayor Ulf Kämpfer (SPD), Minister of Economics Bernd Buchholz (FDP), Vodafone Germany CEO Hannes Ametsreiter and the Vice President of Kiel University, Karin Schwarz, jointly signed an agreement for the "Förde 5G" project.

Förde 5G Letter of Intent

Within the framework of the 'Förde 5G' project, passenger ferries will initially operate partially and later fully autonomously on the Kiel Fjord - with the help of a 5G infrastructure. "5G is a familiar concept to many, but it is not really tangible. With projects like this, 5G is made tangible and it is shown how it can be used in concrete terms," said Minister Buchholz. He thanked the CAU and the state capital of Kiel for implementing the project and in particular Vodafone, the mobile phone provider had spontaneously promised its support for the project.

06.07.2020 _ "CAPTin Kiel" becomes "CAPTN"

Dear team colleagues, project partners, interested parties:

From today on the network appears in a brand new look!
The entire CI has been redesigned with regard to the structure and identity of the network, including logo, colours and fonts, and has undergone a complete redesign. The motivation behind this step is on the one hand the creation of a clear communication and location of the individual projects in the network. On the other hand, the projects are strengthened in their independence by the new naming.
The biggest innovation right from the start: CAPTin Kiel - Clean Autonomous Public Transport Initiative Kiel - will simply become CAPTN: Clean Autonomous Public Transport Network. The name is now much more concise. The "Network" in the abbreviation clarifies the network character and refers to the focus of the entire mobility chain.

The projects are broken down into the following structure:

  • Mobility by water
  • The surrounding infrastructure and access to land
  • Our cooperations and partner project

Aye aye CAPTN!
